«2 Words X 35»

First off, I actually have to go in for jury duty on Monday at 8:00 AM. I've went nearly the entire month without going in. For those of you who haven't read previous posts, I've never had jury duty before, and I want to go through the experience.

I saw this over at Escape Hatch, and thought it would be interesting. You answer each question with exactly 2 words. No more, no less.

1. Where is your cell phone? Doesn't exist.

8. Your favorite drink? Mountain Dew.
9. Your dream/goal? Google employment.
10. The room you're in? Bed Room.
11. Your ex? Doesn't exist.

«Sporn»

I haven't even downloaded the Spore Creature Creator trial yet. I think I will just to play around with it. However, I don't really see the point until the game comes out. I mean, you can't do anything with the creatures once you create them until the game comes out in September.

Ever since I first heard of the game Spore, this is what I've feared: CAD Comic: Spored

The writer of Ctrl+Alt+Del, had this to say about "sporn":

What has surprised me, however, is that the practice is so pervasive that it has attracted its very own moniker.

"Sporn." Spore pornography.

My first thought it "Awww crap, my procedural universe is going to be filled with this shit."

- Tim Buckley

You can read the rest of what he had to say here: Spore please.

That was my first thought as well, over a year ago. I'll do my best to block those creatures from my game, but I still think I'm going to see a lot of them. I also think there will be complaints from enraged parents when they see penisfolk on their children's computer screens.

I don't think it would be possible to have an algorithm to automatically filter them out. Such an algorithm would filter out too many valid creatures as well. I think the best option is to block the players that create it.

And that's exactly what I plan to do. If I get penisfolk (or similar creatures), I'm blocking all content from the player it came from. At least we'll have that option.

«I Think I Found My Spider»

With no help from that spider website I emailed, I think I've found my spider.

Pholcus phalangioides, a good picture of it can also be found on the Wikipedia article for the Pholcidae family. The common name for it: daddy-long-legs spider. I've also confirmed by comparing images from other sites, once I knew what to look for. It's not that I don't trust Wikipedia, it's just that they're not always completely accurate.

Here's the comparison, with my spider picture on the left, and the Wikipedia picture on the right.
Pholcus phalangioides, daddy-long-legs spider.
Note the similarities. Same marking on the head behind the eyes, same body shape and color, same long legs with little hairs on them. Even the web that was described matches what I've seen. In the Wikipedia picture, the spider is eating a fly and you can't see its fangs. However, I did see pictures of these spiders on other sites that showed the fangs.

They are harmless to humans. They are known to eat other spiders (this would explain why I've seen one eating a wolf spider before), even poisonous ones like the black widow and redback spider. They are sometimes considered beneficial because they kill and eat the dangerous spiders. They will invade the webs of other spiders and eat the inhabitants.

That's right, it's the actual daddy-long-legs spider; not the harvestmen or crane fly that are inappropriately called a daddy-long-legs spider by some. Neither the harvestmen or the crane fly are even spiders. The harvestmen is an opiliones, having only one body section and 8 legs. The crane fly is an insect, having 3 body sections and 6 legs.

«If Only Blogger Was Valid XHTML Strict»

Blogger Buster Competition Announcement
This post may be a bit technical or unclear for some of my readers. I don't claim that I've worded it as precisely and clearly as possible, either. This is my entry for the contest the banner above is about.

I would like to see blogger blogs conform to the XHTML Strict doctype they declare themselves as. They can't do much if the blog authors don't use the correct markup, but at least their end could. I didn't see this on the Blogger Wishlist page. There's not anything complicated that's stopping them from conforming, either. Most of the errors are because ampersand symbols (&) are not written as "&" in the code. The only other errors on their side are because they use an inline frame for the blogger navbar at the top and XHTML Strict doesn't support the iframe tag.

The problem with not conforming to standards (especially when you declare a doctype), is not every browser will deal with the errors in the same way. You will get unpredictable results, or bugs that only happen in some browsers.

Speaking of inline frames, it would really be nice if the blogger polls didn't use an inline frame. The first problem with it is, as I pointed out above, the doctype XHTML Strict doesn't support inline frames. The second problem I've ran into with it is it sometimes has a useless (and annoying) scrollbar to the right of the poll.

That scrollbar caused me much grief. I tried to find a way to get rid of it with CSS code. I figured out if I applied an "overflow: hidden;" style to it, I wouldn't get the scrollbar. The problem I ran into is in XHTML, grandchildren selectors in CSS do not work on the iframe tag. What's strange is child selectors do work. My plan was to apply the style to iframes only within the "poll" div class.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This was the grandchild selector I was going to use:

div.poll * iframe {
overflow: hidden;
}

What this means is, it will only apply this style to an iframe that's within any tag that's within a div tag with the class "poll". The asterisk (*) is a wildcard, meaning any tag.

This is what I ended up using, a child selector:

div.widget-content iframe {
overflow: hidden;
}

This will apply to any iframe within a div tag with the class "widget-content". For now, this works for me because I don't have any other widgets that use iframes. However, if I had any other widgets that use an iframe that I wanted scrollbars in, this would be a problem. I'd probably find a way around it by editing the widget's html code to give the poll iframe an ID. However, that's something I'd have to re-do every time I change the poll.

I suppose this wasn't a suggestion for a new widget (as the contest was asking for), but rather a suggestion to improve the existing. Eh, whatever... If you want to get technical, I'm requesting a poll system that does not use an iframe.

«New Poll»

Yet again, for jury duty the trial was canceled. The 30th is the last possible day. If that one doesn't go as scheduled, then I will have gone the entire month without even going in.

Once again, the old poll has been up for so long no one even hardly knows what it's about. Nearly all the votes recently have been "The what?". So, here's the results for the old poll question "Do you like the post truncation?": Yes 7, No 1, and The what? 6.

More posts about...

Here's the new poll (it's also in the sidebar). I thought about allowing multiple choices, but I fear people would choose every option and I wouldn't really get a feeling for what's wanted most. Whether I actually do increase the frequency of the most voted topic or not, I don't know. Either way, it will give me an idea.

Fun fact: I looked up the word "whether" to make sure I had the correct word for my usage of it in the above paragraph, as opposed to "weather" or "wether". The fun fact is that the word "wether" actually exists; it's a castrated ram (male sheep).

«Spiders»

I keep seeing these spiders at my mom's place, and I finally decided to look into what they are, and if I should be worried. I sent an email off to Spider Identification.org, so I'll see what they have to say.

Mysterious spider on June 17, 2008.

I sent in the full-sized version of this image along with this email:

Subject: Please ID this spider

Name: Cody Durkin
Location: Ketchikan, Alaska, United States
Website/Blog: http://mastermarf.blogspot.com/
Email: To stop spambots, you must have javascript enabled to view the email address.
Picture: Attached as spider.jpg

I have seen quite a few of these at my mom's place, but no-where else in town that I can remember. It's a rather old apartment building. With the legs spread out, their leg-span is about the size of a silver dollar. Although as you can see in the picture, their bodies are quite small. The only poisonous spider we're suppose to have here is the brown recluse. This spider does not have the violin shape marking, so it's not one of those.

With nearly a million people passing through this town each year through our tourism industry, any spider could find its way here. We have cruise ships in town during the summer every day, sometimes 5 or 6 at a time. The ships are in Mexico or Australia / New Zealand in the winter. Most of the ships were constructed in Europe, and registered in Bermuda or the Bahamas. So these spiders could have hitched a ride from about anywhere. Because they are in the house, they could easily survive the winters.

They make irregular shaped webs, usually in corners. The webs are not very dense; there are not many strands of silk in the webs.

The picture was taken at about 1:00 AM in the bathroom on June 17, 2008. I kill them with a folded tissue paper every time I see them. I've seen these here ever since my mom moved in the building 3 years ago. Anyway, I'd like to know what type of spider this is, and if it's dangerous. Thanks.

So we'll see if I get a reply.

EDIT: The spider has been identified.

«Thumbtack and Firefox 3, Completely Unrelated»

Once again, no jury duty. The trial has been canceled. Now I've got to call Monday to see if there's a trial on Tuesday.

Today I did some hill climbing with my bicycle. Keep in mind it's only a 5 speed, not one of those fancy 24 speed mountain bikes. Believe me, this town has its share of hills. Much of it is built on the side of a mountain.

When I got home I noticed I had run over a thumbtack. So now my front tire is flat. I'm none too happy about that. I had just bought lights for it so I could do some night riding. (Now I have an image of that car from Knight Rider in my head.) Now I'll have to wait until I fix the tire. My tires are old and cracked anyway, so I might just replace them.

I downloaded Firefox 3, and helped their attempt at setting a world record. I haven't installed it yet, however. What's the previous record for most downloads in one day? Turns out there isn't one. No-one's bothered to formally claim the record. Their target was 5 million, and (at the time I'm writing this) the day isn't quite over yet and they already have 5,144,640. So they've made their goal.

«Firefox 3 Download Day»

Firefox 3 Download Day, June 17 2008.Today is "Download Day" for Firefox 3. They planned to set a world record for the most downloads in a single day. As far as I can tell, they're not doing so well.

They have the interest of enough people I think, so much so that all the traffic crashed their servers. The official download site is http://www.getfirefox.com. All I get when I try to download it is "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable". I suppose I'll just try later.

Well, disregard that. In the time it took me to write this post they got it up and working. For how long I don't know, but I'm going to try to get it while I can. Although the download is going very slow and has long pauses, I may not be able to get it even now...

«Jury Duty Updates»

Jury duty for Monday was also canceled. I have to call in tonight to see if the trial for Wednesday goes as scheduled. My guess, probably not. That's just how it's been going the entire month. I haven't had to go in yet. I'll tell tomorrow.

You lost The Game.

I was looking through the little drop-down menu at all the search terms I've typed into Google. I should really clear that thing more often. At the very bottom was the words "you lost the game". So because I lost the game, I'm making the rest of you lose it as well. So there.

«Social Networking Links»

I was playing around with Feedburner the other day. I've been using it for my webfeeds, but I've tapped into another feature of it. You'll notice links that look like this at the bottom of each post:

Technorati Links • Digg This! • Stumble It! • Save to del.icio.us

So feel free to use them. I figured why not? Just because I don't use those sites doesn't mean I can't benefit from them. Or make it easy for others to use them with my blog. I've never used Digg, Stumble Upon, or del.icio.us. I use Technorati sometimes.

The Technorati Links are posts from other blogs that have responded to my corresponding post. Or if I've responded to another blog. It essentially tracks a topic or conversation through the blogosphere. Since my blog isn't terribly popular yet, most of my posts won't have much of an impact in the blogosphere to track.

You can also use it as a blog search engine. I've found blog posts using Technorati from tourists that went on cruises here. It's interesting to read an outside opinion of this town. See things from the view of a tourist rather than a local.

«Quirks Tag»

I think it would be possible to run a blog completely with tags like this, there's certainly enough of them. I've been tagged by CollegeGirl.

Ok, here's the rules of this one:

  1. Link to the person that tagged you
  2. Mention these rules on your blog
  3. List 6 unspectacular quirks of yours
  4. Tag 6 bloggers by linking to them
  5. Leave a Comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged.
So, here's my 6 Quirks:
  1. I can't sleep right if I leave my computer running overnight. It could just be the noise, as it is in my bedroom. However, deep down I think it's something more.
  2. I usually remove the labels from a bottled drink. Be it water or soda. There's something I don't like about grabbing a bottle with a loose label wrapped around it.
  3. I tend to over-think a lot of situations. Often times to the point that by the time I come to a conclusion it's too late. This happens all the time to me in conversations. Probably one reason I don't say much if there's more than one other person in a conversation.
  4. I'm a pessimist about most things in life. I go by the philosophy of "I'm either right or pleasantly surprised".
  5. I'm awkward in social situations or crowds of people. I kind-of shut down socially. Often times someone could call out my name in a crowd and I wouldn't acknowledge that they were calling me. I'm not used to people paying much attention to me when there's others around, so I assume they're calling a different Cody.
  6. I like to wear my black trench coat wherever I go in public; even on rather hot days. I've been trying to break this one lately, at least for the summer.
I'm not going to tag 6 other bloggers. I'll tag as many as I feel like. In this case... 3. I'll comment on their blogs a little later informing them they've been tagged. The following are tagged:

«Miles of Bicycle Riding»

I spend most of yesterday riding my bicycle. I rode the road South of town to the end of the pavement and back; about 9 miles one way. Then I went back and forth through town and around the mall parking lot after traffic died down. The day before I took the bike 12 miles, then back and forth through town. Needless to say, my legs are a little tired. I've also did a bit of riding last week.

The funny thing is, I gain weight from exercise. I know that sounds counterintuitive. I have no excess fat to speak of, so I don't loose weight. And I gain because I'm building muscle mass. I haven't gained a lot; only 3-6 lbs in the past week or two. Still, I'm usually a rock-steady 160 lbs.

«I've Been Awarded»

Amazing Blogger AwardI've received a blogging award from Monique. See? I've seen these and other similar awards displayed on many other blogs. Now I've been awarded.

Now, before you read any further, I do appreciate the thought. I would like to thank Monique for that. Now with the little disclaimer over, I hope I don't offend Monique too much with my next point...

What's the requirements for such an award? Why does seemingly everyone willing to display one have one (or many)? What's the point (other than for an individual to show personal appreciation for a blog)? It's kind-of like the Emmys, and Oscars, Nobel Peace Prize, and whatever else celebrities award each other with. There's so many awards, and so may people have them, that they all loose their meaning and importance.

I'd like to re-affirm I do appreciate the thought. However, I don't plan on displaying the award in my sidebar. I might make a separate awards page if I end up collecting a few more. Yeah, right. Like I'll get any more rewards after how ungrateful I sound here...

As far as my jury duty: there was a trial for Tuesday, but I called in and it was canceled. So now I have to call in on Friday, June 13 to see if the one for Monday, June 16 is going to go as scheduled. Only because I want to do it, I'll probably go through the entire month without having to go in at all.

«Google Icon»

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

I noticed a couple of weeks ago Google changed their favicon from a capitol 'G' to a lowercase 'g'. I'm happy to have read this new favicon Google has isn't a final product. Because I for one don't like the lowercase 'g' icon. A lot of people call Google "The Big 'G'", and having a lowercase letter in their icon just isn't right.

To steal an image from the Official Google Blog (specific article linked above)
Google favicon iterations
These are a few of the different icons they considered. My favorite out of these is the circular one in the bottom row. I don't at all like the ones that have no letter(s). They're just odd shapes, and doesn't associate with Google in my mind at all. Although I don't see what was wrong with the old icon.

I also don't think spelling out the entire name will work. A favicon is only 16x16, and that's not big enough to spell out a word and have it easily read. I found that out when I was designing my favicon for this blog. I was originally going to spell out 'Marf' in the little green circle, but the text was too small to read. So I just went with a big 'M' instead.

Eh, that's my opinion on it.

«NASA Twitter»

Twittering 'from Mars'

NASA has set up a Twitter channel for the Mars Phoenix lander. Neat idea. These were the first words to be twittered by the lander:

  • "The parachute is open!!"
  • "Come on Rocketssssss!!!"
  • "I've landed !!!!!"
  • "Cheers! Tears! I'm here!"
Now it looks like the Twitter channel is a Q&A. People can ask questions and someone at NASA answerers as though it's the lander answering.

I keep hearing about Twitter. I know what it is, but I've never really looked into it.I guess I don't have anyone or anything thing that I'd care to read twitterings about.

«Pocket Inventory»

Well, I called in for jury duty and the trial set for today was canceled. Now I have to call on the 9th after 5pm for further instructions.

As I promised earlier, here's an inventory of my pockets. We'll assume I'm dressed as I would be if you met me out on the street; fully clothed, with my vest and coat on. I usually carry things in my jeans, trench coat, and (mainly) my vest. Some of the items I carry are quite random.

Pants (5 pockets)

  • 4GB thumb drive
  • house keys
  • wallet
Trench coat (5 pockets)
  • 3 feet of CAT 6 networking cable
  • atomic fireball candy
  • checkbook
  • earplugs
  • fake rose petal
  • wint-o-green mints
Scott-e-vest (29 pockets)
  • 2 AAA batteries
  • 2 sets of earplugs
  • 5 hair ties
  • carmex lip ointment
  • comb
  • earbuds (wired through the vest)
  • folding scissors
  • green laser pointer
  • gum
  • hand sanitizer
  • LED flashlight
  • leatherman micro
  • lighter
  • micro-fiber cloth (for cleaning glasses)
  • MP3 player
  • napkins
  • non-functioning mini-flashlight
  • pen
  • sheet of paper
  • spare shoelaces
  • titanium spork
I have plenty more room in the vest, and several empty pockets still. The vest has a few deep pockets that I can make surprisingly large items disappear into, as well as 2 water bottle holders that I sometimes use.

«Fuel Prices»

So, how are fuel prices in your area? What about diesel? This is what they're like here in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Safeway fuel prices in Ketchikan, Alaska.Yup, that's $3.919 for regular unleaded gas and $4.889 for diesel.

At this point, I'm curious what they'll do with the sign when it reaches $10.009. It seems most of the signs and pumps were not designed for the extra digit. Maybe they'll do away with that 9 on the end. I've always thought that added 9/10 of a cent was so ridiculous. It should be rounded to the nearest cent, don't you think?

I'll have to call in tonight "for further instructions", but if nothing has changed, Wednesday will be my first day of jury duty. My group number was called. Despite the common loathing associated with jury duty, I'm looking forward to it. This will be my first time.

Too bad that if I get on a trial I can't say anything about it until the trial is over.

EDIT #1: It also appears that Google Groups is not working right. I wounder what sort of problems they're having over at Google...

EDIT #2: Seems to be fixed now. Crisis over...
