«Miles of Bicycle Riding»

I spend most of yesterday riding my bicycle. I rode the road South of town to the end of the pavement and back; about 9 miles one way. Then I went back and forth through town and around the mall parking lot after traffic died down. The day before I took the bike 12 miles, then back and forth through town. Needless to say, my legs are a little tired. I've also did a bit of riding last week.

The funny thing is, I gain weight from exercise. I know that sounds counterintuitive. I have no excess fat to speak of, so I don't loose weight. And I gain because I'm building muscle mass. I haven't gained a lot; only 3-6 lbs in the past week or two. Still, I'm usually a rock-steady 160 lbs.

  1. That sounds nice, do you get a little stir-crazy being on the island?

  2. Yes, I do. Only way off the island is by boat. Even to get to our airport you need to take a boat because the airport is on a different island.

I haven't left the island for a couple years now...

  3. Wow. I thought you were more on the mainland side. That would be annoying to have such a limited range. How big is your island?

    Can you do kayaking there?

  4. @ Looney: The name of the island is Revillagigedo. It is the 12th largest island in the US at 1,063.65 square miles. About 110 miles around by boat. However, the vast majority of it is unaccessible by road.

And yes, there are people that kayak here. They even have kayaking tours in the summer for the tourists.

  5. Just found out a friend of mine here lived in Ketchikan for a couple of years. She mentioned it Thursday when talking about her wedding plans and I asked her how she ended up here. She said really loved it there, based on your pictures I can see why, but it would get frustrating to not leave every once in a while.

  6. @ Barbara: Amazing how small the world is sometimes, isn't it?

  7. Always is, the world is a lot smaller than people think. On a trip to Yellowstone years ago when I was living in California I happened to run into someone I had gone to school with in South Carolina 3 years earlier. And my first day of college I was walking down the stairs in the dorm and ran into someone I had gone to school with my freshman year of high school. Considering we were 4 states away and I had gone to 3 high school in 3 other states since and hadn't kept in touch with her it was pretty amazing to see her. Always amazes me.
