«ICANN Control»

ICANN LogoHe who controls the ICANN controls the internet.

Viviane Reding, the EU Information Society Commissioner, wants ICANN out of United States control. I don't blame her. If I lived in any other country I'd tend to agree with her. However, I live in the United States.

ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Basically, they control all the domain names and IP addresses. If anyone registers a domain name, they have to do so through an ICANN approved registrar.

However much I think our rights of privacy and freedom of speech are being eroded, I still trust the United States more than any other governance1. I vote (for what it counts) to keep ICANN under United States control when it comes time to renew ICANN's agreement on September 30th.
