«I Hate Copyright»

I don't know if anyone noticed, but in yesterday's post (titled Lots of Google Images) for the question about my current mood I answered "troubled". This is because of something that happened with a picture in the It's Caturday! post.

Apparently, one of the pictures in that post was copyrighted. Instead of simply contacting me requesting its removal (my email can be found in the About section), they reported it as a copyright infringement to Blogger (I would have immediately removed it upon request).

I mean, seriously... It was just a stupid picture of a cat sitting behind a laptop with the caption "they r make fun of me". It's not like it was even a commercial use of the picture. How do I know it was that picture? Because when I went to check that blog post the picture had already been removed. I then checked the Picasa web album blogger creates and it was still there, so I deleted that one.

I get pictures from all sorts of random sources. There's no way I'd know if they are copyrighted or not. Please, if there's something of yours on my site, email me first. Inform me first, and I can take it off or give proper credit, whichever you prefer.

So anyway, that's what's troubling me at the moment. Here's the email I received from Blogger support, with things I removed for my own privacy in italics:

[#removed for privacy] Blogger DMCA Complaint received

  1. You have got to be kidding....

Someone is on your ass Marf, that's the only thing that makes sense....

Sorry you are having a rough one.

  2. Maybe it's a Scientologist, unhappy with my opinions of their church. This is one way that they attack people.

    Probably not, though...

  3. Awe, sorry, just wondering if the photo was so stupid why did you save it and post it on your blog? You must of liked it : ]

P.S. You never know if it's copyrighted or legit if it came from Icanhascheezburger.com.: [
Apparently they wanted it so bad, they took it without my permission or knowledge as you already know.

Cheer up, as I'm so done filing NOI's and writing you bloggers everyday for a year. I so give up.
Put the "stupid" photo back up. I'm done!

P.S. Oh and I hate creative common attribution licensings.

  4. Well, that's SO not what I was SO coming here to say, but interesting li'l comment by Red.

Funny though, I was just skimming through the Share forum, wondering what ever happened w/ this jerk-off who commented about the purpose of the forum.

Then it dawned on me, that weirdo was going off on you for trying to be helpful. It was funny to me that I didn't associate you and that message at all....

And then ironic that I arrive to say that and find li'l red being pissy... Too funny.

  5. what is a share forum and what jerk off are you taking about monique. Huh? Nobody in a share forum was talking to me as I don't post in any forums ever. I don't even have a blog. I don't know why someone would be helping me, and helping me do what? in a share forum when I don't post anything in forums of any kind.

Before you jump to conclusions monique, someone on Master Marf's blog posted a comment that said see here or something to the effect and left a link to click on. They posted the comment about the same time I posted my comment here on Master Marf's blog.
I don't know where the link led.

I looked up his blog through a google search and found something where people were complaining this person was putting a link to a virus on other people's blog's for some time now. I read what people were saying about that person. I didn't post anything in a share forum.
I thought he was a friend of your's and Master Marf's.

Then, I come back to look at the comments again to see what link he was leading people to and it was deleted.

Monique, please don't jump on the bandwagon and accuse me of hanging out in share forums. I was commenting about my photo to Master Marf not you.

    Get your facts straight.

  6. Whoa..... I don't know you, I made no comment TO you at all. Nothing that was said was directed at or about you. Bandwagon ? Are you serious ?

    Go away.

  7. Actually, sorry Marf, L- guess I shouldn't tell someone to go away from your blog... I will until this done.

  8. In some ways, this is worse than that "see here" spam. At least I feel justified to just delete that. Now, I expect further comment discussion to be civil, or I'll just disable commenting on this post.

@ Red: I called the picture stupid in part because I was upset. Perhaps the better term is silly. Because the whole concept of Caturday is silly. Why do I participate in it then if it's "stupid" or silly? Because I don't want to be serious all the time.

And no, I'm not going to put the picture back up. It's not worth the trouble it caused.

That "see here" link was just spam. A fairly malicious spam at that. Definitely not a friend of mine. I try to delete those before many other people see it. I'm not the only blog with this problem.

I'm sorry about using your picture.

@ Monique: I have to say, I'm not sure what you're talking about with the share forum and all that. Could you perhaps clear that up?

And you may have not made a comment TO Red, but you made a rather negative comment ABOUT him. (the being pissy statement)

  9. No, you're right Marf - I was rude.
For that I apologize. It just completely irks me when - ok I'll stop.

Anyway, the forum thing I referred to is this exchange .

Sounds like everything else is taken care of....

  10. Copy right infringement is a tricky thing. I always felt that if it is on the internet, then it should be available on to everyone. But, most everyone is motivated by the "fat-assed dirty dolla" You think I will get harassed for quoting a line from a Tool song?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Brian - I agree w/ you which is why I get so hot-headed on the issue.

If you put it on the internet w/out a watermark to protect your copyright, then just let it go.

You will drive yourself bonkers trying to keep up w/ it and would still fail miserably, it is impossible.

Watermarking is easy easy to do too.

So whenever I see someone claiming infringement, to me it just means personal attack or a reason to gripe. Just my opinion though....

Disclaimer : I am in no way discussing the Caturday mess and just blankly talking topic here.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @ Brian: I know, the internet should be all public domain. But, it's not.

@ Monique: Oh, the share your blog forum. I'm not even going to respond to that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have added your blog link on my sight as I find it quite entertaining

  14. Hi Marf,
Sorry, it sounded like monique was assuming I was in a share forum and that I put up the link before mine. At least that is how I took it but I didn't come here to dwell on this.

I have nothing against Caturday photos and never claimed my photo was anything spectacular to say the least.

No appologies for putting my photo up. Like you said "how do you know when they are copyrighted"? You don't always know.

@ monique, I don't know if Marf explained the background of the photo. I'd like to add that my photo is watermarked and also registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.

@ monique, watermarking is easy to strip..That is why all my photo's are registered as well.

@ monique: "Claiming" Infringement as you put it is serious. If a so called copyright owner was sending out false NOI's this would be against the law. I believe copyright owners file NOI's because it "IS" their photo.
I never accused Master Marf personally, that is why I mentioned an important facter in my notice.
I didn't come here to rage either.

monique@ However, I do agree with you that one will find themselves very frustrated trying to take down the image on the internet.
You are absolutely correct, it's impossible to succeed.

I don't know why I held on to it for so long. That is why I said it was time to move on regarding my photo, what's done is done.
    I'm putting it to rest.
    Sincerely
    SML

  15. Red - You know what...

I respect that this is Cody's space.... I quit reading your drivel when I saw the 2nd @, because I will lose it and that would not be cool.

    I'm done w/ you.

  16. @ Brian: Thanks for the link.

@ Red: I didn't see a watermark on your photo, so I must have a version that was already stripped. (Damn good job of it, too. There's no hint of watermarking that I can tell on the photo)

@ Monique: It's best just to let this one go...
